Kamakhya is a locality in Guwahati, Assam, which is 20 kilometers (12 mi) from the Guwahati Airport and about 6 km from Guwahati Railway Station, it also has own railway junction called Kamakhya Junction.
Kamakhya is known for presence of ancient Kamakhya Temple in Nilachal pahar or hill. Ambubachi Mela held here annually attracts pilgrimage from other parts of country as well as from abroad. In February 2012, this area came into limelight with the discovery of rock cut caves built during the reign of Kamarupa king Mahendra Varman.
Arrive at Guwahati. Proceed to Shillong (130 kms - 3 hrs). Enroute visit Umiam Lake. Evening take a walk at Police Bazaar for shopping.
Drive to Cherrapunjee, the wettest place on the earth, for an awesome day trip. En route visit the famous Elephant Falls and Shillong Peak - to enjoy a bird’s eye view of Shillong city. At Sohra, stop at the Duwan Sing Syiem view point for mesmerizing views of the Hills. In Cherrapunjee be witness to the gorgeous Seven Sisters Falls and Nohkalikai Falls. Later take a soft cave walk inside the Mawsmai Cave. The limestone cave is a natural wonder with innumerable formations inside it. After lunch at Cherrapunjee, visit Thankarang Park. Drive back to Shillong.
Proceed to Kaziranga (250 kms - 6 hrs). Kaziranga is the biggest reserve in Assam and one of the best wildlife experiences in whole of India. Main Attraction of Kaziranga is one-horned rhinos.
Early morning elephant ride in central range. Follow it up with Central Zone Safari. Return by Lunch time and then do local visits in Kaziranga.
Return to Guwahati. Visit Kamakhya Temple Proceed to Guwahati (200 kms - 4 hours). Time permitting visit other temples in the area such as Bhubaneswari Temple, Bagalamukhi, Chinnamasta, Tripura Sundari, Tara, Kali, Bhairavi, Dhumavati, Matangi and Kamala Temples.
